Party Official Heckles Ondo Electoral Commissioner

Post  nex on Wed Jul 28, 2010 10:14 pm

There was a mild drama at the stakeholders meeting organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for political parties participating in Saturday’s re-run election in Ilaje Constituency II, Ondo State, when the media officer of Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, Bola Ilori, openly asked the resident electoral commissioner, Ayoka Adebayo, to tender her resignation.

The electoral body had organised the stakeholders’ meeting to sensitise political parties participating in the election on its preparedness for election.

In attendance were representatives of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP) and members of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP). Also present were representatives of Nigerian Police, Civil Defence, National Orientation Agency (NOA) and relevant monitoring groups.

Mr. Ilori told Mrs. Adebayo that she was unfit to conduct the election because of the role she played in the 2009 re-run governorship election in Ekiti. He also accused her of being used by former President Olusegun Obasanjo who had earlier threatened to capture Ondo and Lagos States for the PDP.

“Ondo State is noted for credible election and the people of the state will not take anything short of credible election. We want to know if you have tendered your resignation letter,” he said.

I am a human being

But Mrs. Adebayo replied that she was not posted to the state by Mr. Obasanjo. “Obasanjo did not post me to Ondo State, Obasanjo does not have a stake in this Saturday’s election,” she said.

“Only Mr. Attahiru Jega has the right to post me to any state, he is the only person who can ask me to resign. I am a human being like every one of you. Those who know me know that I am straight forward, I promise everybody in Ondo State to be fair, honest and faithful. I didn’t go to the field but the politicians were the one who went to the field.

“What transpired during the election, I read it to the whole world. No matter what people say, I will do the best and after the election we will all have course to glorify God”.

Mrs. Adebayo, who said about 80 youth corps members have been recruited alongside INEC staff to conduct the election, will be participated by only four political parties: Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, Action Congress and Democratic Peoples Alliance.
